First Contact Physiotherapy
Patients are now able to see a musculoskeletal first contact physiotherapist without being referred by a GP
Self-referral is particularly suitable for people with relatively simple conditions. The Physio First team will assess conditions such as:
- Acute sports injuries
- Low back pain
- Cervical pain
- Shoulder pain/stiffness/impingement
- Elbow pain/stiffness
- Wrist/Hand osteoarthritis
- Hip muscular pain/weakness
- Knee ligament damage or specific injury
- Foot/Ankle sprains or plantar fasciitis

The vast majority of musculoskeletal first contact practitioners are physiotherapists with enhanced skills. They can help patients by:
- assessing and diagnosing issues
- giving expert advice on how best to manage their conditions
- referring them onto specialist services if necessary
